Health-insurance deductions

Under the old regime, eligible health premiums for self, spouse and dependent children have a ₹25,000 limit; a separate ₹25,000 limit applies for parents. The relevant limit can rise to ₹50,000 for eligible senior citizens.

Payment and regime checks

The preventive health check-up allowance of ₹5,000 is included within the applicable limit, not added on top. Insurance premiums generally require non-cash payment. These personal health deductions are not available under the new regime.

Other general-insurance policies

Do not treat every motor, home, travel or business policy as eligible for a personal health deduction. Business use, expense eligibility and claim receipts need a separate tax review. Keep premium receipts and settlement documents.
